Shaun was born on 19 October 1986 in Malahide near Dublin. He joined Drogheda United in 2005 and moved to Irish Premier Division side Sporting Finghal in 2009, winning the 2010 Players Football Association of Ireland Young Player of the Year award and playing for the Republic of Ireland Under-23s.

After Sporting Finghal went into receivership, Shaun joined MK Dons on a free transfer on 16 March 2011. He was originally signed to play in midfield but was converted to playing as a ball-playing central defender by manager Karl Robinson.

He was the Dons’ designated penalty taker for most of his time at the club.He scored 25 goals in 137 appearances and at the end of the 2012-13 season he was named the Dons’ Player of the Year and the Players’ Player of the Year.

He left Milton Keynes to join Millwall on 27 January 2014 for an undisclosed fee, reported in the media to be around £250,000.
