Born in Dublin on 3 August 1988, Stephen played for Cherry Orchard before moving to England to join Wolverhampton Wanderers, signing a three-year contract in May 2006 after coming up through the club's Academy. He was capped twice for Ireland in 2007 after playing 19 times for Ireland’s Under-21 side and scoring two goals.

He joined MK Dons in March 2009 initially on loan and signed permanently on 1 July for an undisclosed fee. In his five years at the club he scored 17 goals in 206 appearances and gained a reputation for long-range strikes, most notably to put the MK Dons 1-0 up against AFC Wimbledon in the FA Cup on 2 December 2012.

He struck up a successful central midfield partnership with Darren Potter, which led to both being named in the League One Team of the Year 2012.

He left the Dons in 2014 to join Birmingham City on a free transfer as he was out of contract.
