Mathias Kouo-Doumbé was born in Drancy, a suburb of Paris, on 28 October 1979. He is a graduate of the French Clairefontaine Academy, where he played alongside a young Thierry Henry, and started his professional career at Paris Saint-Germain and was capped by the French under-21 team.

He joined Scottish Premier League club Hibernian in 2001, playing in the 2004 Scottish League Cup Final. He moved south to Plymouth Argyle in May 2004, and spent five seasons playing in the Championship before coming to MK.

He scored 12 goals in 141 appearances. His most notable goal was at Wycombe Wanderers, where he dribbled the ball from the edge of the box, down the length of the pitch and curled it into the net for the only goal of the game.

He left the Dons in September 2013 to join Northampton Town.
